OSWEGO, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team opened their 2023 season with a 6-3 win over Oswego State on Friday afternoon from the Romney Tennis Courts.
"I'm happy to get a win today," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "It was a bit uglier than we wanted. There were a lot of points left on the table, but we must have a short-term memory as we get into our first home match tomorrow. We're excited to get to play in front of our fans. See you there!"
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) got the Saxons started with an 8-5 win from No. 2 doubles. Call later picked up a victory in No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Madsen recorded her first collegiate singles win from the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-4.
Both
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) picked up where they left off last season, securing an 8-5 win from No. 1 doubles. Zabihailo later recorded the first singles win for the Saxons in 6-0, 6-3 fashion from the No. 1 position.
Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) and
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) combined for an 8-4 win from No. 3 doubles.
Alfred University will next host SUNY Fredonia on Saturday with matches scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
