ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team was unable to keep up with the scoring consistency of Hartwick College as part of a 22-6 loss on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) had a busy afternoon, picking up 14 saves for the Saxons (1-10, 1-4 Empire 8). Piechota has now totaled 455 saves during her career with Alfred University, marking the fifth-highest total in program history.
The Saxons were led by
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR), who totaled six points from four goals and two assists.
Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) scored once while dishing one assist.
"Hartwick was quick to apply double pressure when we had the ball, and there were times when we did not communicate or find the open person quick enough," Head Coach
Julie Decker said. "Our clears and offensive sets worked well when we found the easy pass and got the ball moving quickly. Defensive communication and slides improved today."
A pass from
Maddie Shaw (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) to Booth opened scoring for AU in the first quarter. The Hawks retaliated with two goals of their own before Turner equalized the score. Hartwick scored five straight goals before Booth found the back of the net twice in the second quarter. The Hawks added two more goals of their own to take a 9-4 lead going into the break.
Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) was the lone Saxon to score in the third quarter. Booth followed with another goal in the final quarter, but the Hawks managed to extend their lead and seal the victory.
"We're glad to have a little more time between games this week so that we can spend more time learning, practicing, preparing, and most importantly getting some extra rest and care for our bodies," Decker said.
Alfred University will next travel to Utica University for their final road game of the regular season on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
