BUFFALO, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat to Medaille University on Tuesday afternoon at the South Towns Tennis Club.

In doubles action, Mike Roberts (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Bill Tran (Hanoi, Vietnam/Grace Christian) won their match by a score of 8-6 from the No. 2 spot. Walker Waldon (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) and Matthew Bittel (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) had a barn-burning match from the No.1 spot, losing 8-7 in the end. 

In singles play, Roberts took care of business from the No.1 spot in two sets. Waldon won a close matchup in a third, tie-breaking set from the No. 3 spot. Tran was also able to pick up a win from the No. 6 spot. Matthew Hibbert (Oswego, NY/Oswego) forced a third set in his respective match but wasn't able to come away with the win. 

"This one hurts. We had opportunities to capitalize but just didn't take advantage when we needed to. Have to get back at it tomorrow in practice to get ready for this weekend!" Head Coach Jordan Crouch said.

The Saxons fought hard throughout the match but were unable to overcome the early lead the Mavericks gained in doubles play. The 2-1 advantage from doubles, proved to be just enough to earn the Mavericks the win, as the teams split the six singles sets 3-3.

Alfred University will next play at home against St. John Fisher University on Friday, April 14th at 4:00 PM.
