ALFRED, NY – A competitive effort from the Alfred University men's basketball team led to an 88-68 win over #6 Allegheny College on Saturday night during the ECAC Men's Basketball Tournament Semifinals.
The Saxons (21-7, 14-4 Empire 8) finished 52.2 percent from the field, while the Gators (20-10, 15-5 MAC) gave up 16 turnovers.
Alfred University was led by
Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean), who finished with a double-double performance that consisted of 18 points and a career-high 14 assists.
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored a team-high 25 points to go with six rebounds.
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) added 15 points and seven boards for AU.
"Any postseason win is a big deal so we're really happy about that," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "Allegheny is a very good team, and they had a great season."
The Saxons relied on the 3-point shot in the early stages of the first half, scoring nine of their first eleven points from beyond the arc. Later in the half, a jumper from
Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) was followed by a 3-point shot from
Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) to give AU their first double-digit advantage of the evening before entering the break with a 45-34 lead. Alfred University put together a quick 7-2 run to open the second half to extend their lead. Six different Saxons scored in the second half, as the team never trailed before eventually advancing to the ECAC Finals.
"We're excited to compete one more time together and try to send off our seniors with a win," Kaempffe said.
Alfred University will next wrap up their 2022-23 season in the ECAC Tournament Finals against #1 Alvernia University with tip-off at 1:00 PM.
