Mustangs Edge out Saxons in Contested Matchup

MORRISVILLE, NY - The Alfred University women's lacrosse team lost a contested matchup to SUNY Morrisville by a score of 12-6 on Wednesday night from Drake Field.

The Saxons (0-6, 0-0 Empire 8) were unable to secure the victory against the Mustangs (2-6, 0-0 United East) in their final tune-up game before the start of Empire 8 play.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led the Saxons in points with two goals and an assist. Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) and Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) also had two goals each. Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) had two assists for AU. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster) recorded 19 saves for the Saxons.

"It was a tale of two halves for us again, except this time we got off to a strong start. We didn't share the ball as well in the second half, forced some things that caused us to lose possession, and Morrisville took advantage." Head Coach Julie Decker said.

The Mustangs were first on the scoreboard with two early goals, but the Saxons responded with back-to-back goals from Bedette and Stroh to tie the game. The game opened up at this point, with both teams trading goals back and forth until late in the second period. With 5:08 left to play in the second quarter, Booth fired in her second goal of the game to give Alfred their first lead, 6-5. Morrisville State countered back with a goal to end the half, tying the game at 6-6. Unfortunately, the Saxons were unable to find the back of the net in the second half, falling short 12-6 in the end.

Alfred University will return home on Friday, March 31 at 7:00 PM for their first Empire 8 Matchup against Keuka College.
