ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team celebrated a historic night following a 18-9 win over Keuka College on Friday evening from Yunevich Stadium.
Both
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) and
Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) became members of the Alfred University women's lacrosse record book as part of the victory. Early in the first quarter, Booth secured her 164th career draw control to put herself as the all-time leader for the Saxons. In the following quarter, Piechota secured her 400th career save with AU, becoming just the sixth player in program history to do so while wearing purple and gold.
The Saxons were led by
Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool), who scored a career-high five goals across seven shots on goal. Booth finished the game with five goals while picking up a season-high 16 draw controls, just four shy of her own Empire 8 record from the 2022 season.
Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) added three goals for AU. Piechota picked up 10 saves along with five ground balls.
"It was great to get a win tonight to start Empire 8 competition as well as have everybody contribute!" Head Coach
Julie Decker said. "I'm excited to have this game under our belt to build our confidence and carry it forward into a tough Empire 8 schedule."
Alfred University was the first to get on the scoreboard in the opening quarter, with Stroh scoring within the first two minutes of action. The Wolves responded with a goal of their own, which was ultimately answered with goals from Stroh and Wise. Keuka scored twice more in the first quarter, but goals from
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy),
Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo), and Booth gave the Saxons a 6-3 lead.
In the second quarter, Stroh found the back of the net in the opening minute to complete her respective hat trick. Alfred University remained in control on the offensive end, as Booth, Wise, and Bedette each scored to extend the lead.
Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) joined the scoring fest with her first goal of the evening to give AU some breathing room. The Wolves scored twice in the final seven minutes of the half, but another goal from Call had the Saxons leading 12-5 at the break.
The second half had a similar tone for Alfred University, as Booth, Stroh and Wise combined for four goals across the first eight minutes of the third quarter. The defense limited the Wolves to one goal in the third quarter, as the Saxons held with 16-6 lead with one quarter remaining. Booth was the lone member of AU to score in the fourth quarter, finding the back of the net twice, including on a man-down situation. Keuka responded with three goals of their own, but Alfred University was able to hold on and secure their first conference win of the spring season.
"We'll continue to clean up the details on all our possessions as we prepare for Nazareth so we can keep some of this momentum going," Decker said.
Alfred University will next travel to face Nazareth College on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
