BUFFALO, NY - The Alfred University women's lacrosse team were defeated by a score of 15-4 to Buffalo State University on Wednesday night from Coyer Field.
The Saxons (0-4, 0-0 Empire 8) weren't able to come away with the victory against the Bengals (3-2, 0-0 SUNYAC).
Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) led the Saxons with two goals across five shots. Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) added a goal and two assists for the Saxons. Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) had a goal of her own, along with an assist. Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) also had a goal. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster) recorded 18 saves for AU.
"We battled hard and improved tonight," Head Coach Julie Decker said. "We were able to stay composed and persevere through the challenges. Alyssa played great and came up with a lot of saves tonight. Our defense was doing a good job pressuring the ball and forcing shooters to get shots off quickly with limited space. Offensively, we are creating opportunities and were able to convert well for most of the game."
Goals from Turner and Booth to start the second quarter helped the Saxons to cut the lead to 4-2. The Bengals then scored five straight to lead 9-2 going into halftime. The Saxons tried to make a push to start the third quarter with back-to-back goals from Stroh and Wise, but weren't able to further build on their momentum. Wise added on another goal late for her first multiple-goal game as a Saxon.
"For the next game, we will clean up transitions - building more confidence with the ball through the midfield, and cutting back to ball. We are still developing a sense of grit when it comes to ground balls, as well." Decker said.
Alfred University is set to play next at Grove City College on Saturday, March 25 at 11:00 AM.
