ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women's lacrosse team opened their spring season with a 20-8 loss to Fredonia State University on Wednesday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) jumped out to an early 3-2 lead but weren't able to hold the Blue Devils (3-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) off the rest of the way.
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led the Saxons with five goals across seven shots. Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) finished the game with two goals. Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) scored her first collegiate goal. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster) recorded 15 saves for AU.
"This is not the result we were looking for today, but we will certainly learn from this game and make adjustments to improve as a team moving forward," Head Coach Julie Decker said.
Booth set the tone for the Saxons, scoring within the first five minutes of action for the early lead. Fredonia got themselves on the scoreboard, but an additional goal from Booth was followed by a goal from Wise to take back the lead entering the second quarter. The Blue Devils responded by outscoring the Saxons 10-2 in the second quarter before taking a 12-5 lead going to halftime.
Booth was the lone Saxon to score in the third quarter, as the team trailed 17-6 with one quarter to play. Booth and Stroh each found the back of the net in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils maintained their lead up through the final horn.
"Some key areas to work on before our next game will be winning the 50/50 balls, moving the ball quicker offensively, and being quicker to pick up the biggest threats defensively," Decker said.
Alfred University will next host Daemen University on Wednesday, March 15 at 4:00 PM.
