Men's Basketball Silences Gators in 86-54 Victory

ALBANY, NY - The Alfred University men's basketball team led for all 40 minutes during their 86-54 win over Russell Sage College on Friday night from the Kahl Campus Center. 

The Saxons (15-5, 10-3 Empire ) set-season high team marks with 51 rebounds and 26 assists. The Gators (3-16, 1-11 Empire 8) shot just 32.8 percent from the field in their loss.The 10th conference win for Alfred University marks the most since the 2018-19 season. 

Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led Alfred University with a double-double performance that consisted of 27 points and 12 rebounds. Robby Hicks (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) added 12 points from AU, with all his points coming from 3-point territory. 

"I'm very happy with the effort we had tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "We played hard, and I loved how unselfish we were."

The Saxons set the tone early thanks to an opening 7-0 run across the first three minutes of action. A layup from Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) gave AU their first double-digit advantage of the evening. A 13-0 run by the Saxons extended the lead by as many as 29 points with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Russell Sage ended the half with a quick 8-2 run, but Alfred University still led by a 50-23 margin going into the break.

Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) was among the Saxons to score early in the second half, as he put up seven straight points. Moments later, Marshall scored eight consecutive points for AU to hold onto a 35-point advantage. Three additional Saxons scored across the final five minutes of play before the final horn allowed Alfred University to walk away with the win. 

"Hartwick is a very good team," Kaempffe said. "We know they will play well tomorrow, and we're excited for the chance to compete with them."

Alfred University will next stay on the road to face Hartwick College with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
