Women's Basketball Rebounds With Blowout Win Over CCNY

DANBURY, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team returned to the win column following a dominant 85-35 win over The College City of New York on Saturday as part of the Hat City Classic.

The Saxons (4-6, 0-2 Empire 8) totaled 62 rebounds in their efforts, marking the most in a single game since the record (71) was broken in December of 2013. The win for the Saxons marks the 50th career win for Head Coach Mike Moskowitz, who is just the third coach in program history to eclipse 50 wins with Alfred University.

Following the win, Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was honored as part of the Hat City Classic All-Tournament Team.

Alyssa DiMillo (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) led Alfred University with 15 points off the bench to go with five rebounds. Kate Quinn (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) recorded 12 points and four boards. Leah Harkenrider (Hornell, NY/Hornell) added 12 points for AU.

"We talked about jumping on CCNY early," Moskowitz said. "We wanted to score inside-out against their zone and have a concerted team defensive effort. We did all those things early and were able to build a nice lead that we sustained. It was nice to have contributions across the board, including impressive rebounds and assists totals from a variety of players. We are looking forward to next week's conference games and continue to get better every day."

The Saxons came out strong in the first quarter, as four different players scored as part of an opening 10-0 run. The defense held CCNY without a point across the first three minutes of action. A 15-0 run allowed Alfred University to take a 25-3 lead into the second quarter. Back-to-back three-point shots by DiMillo extended the lead for AU. The defense once again stood tall for the Saxons, as CCNY didn't record a point until roughly halfway through the second quarter. Rittenhouse added eight points for the Saxons before the team led 45-11 at the break.

Harkenrider and Felicia Stewart (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) combined for the team's first 11 points in the third quarter. CCNY went on a brief 6-0 run, but Alfred University still led 65-23 with one quarter remaining. DiMillo led the Saxons with seven points in the fourth quarter before relying on their depth to secure the win.

Alfred University will next resume Empire 8 competition with a home game against St. John Fisher University on Friday at 5:30 PM.
