GALLATIN, TN – The Alfred University men's basketball team concluded the Music City Classic with a 72-58 loss to Heidelberg University on Saturday.
The Saxons (4-7, 1-1 Empire 8) limited the Student Princes (8-3, 4-0 OAC) to 20 percent from three-point territory.
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany/Lycee Jean Renoir) led Alfred University with a team-high 21 points to go with three rebounds.
Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) recorded a double-double performance that consisted of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
"Tonight, we did a nice job for about 30 minutes and then hit a little bit of a wall for the last 10 minutes," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "We'll work on fixing that. Big picture, North Park and Heidelberg are two tremendous teams. I was proud of how we competed, and we'll look at some things that came up on both sides of the ball during these two games and try to clean those things up. Our whole program wants to thank all those that made this trip possible and an unforgettable experience for our student-athletes. We could not be any more grateful."
Heidelberg was the first to get on the scoreboard, but the Saxons responded with a 9-0 run to take the early lead. Valenzuela scored six of AU's points during an 8-1 run to lead by double-digits. Both sides traded late shots in the first half before the Saxons took a 32-24 advantage into the break. Wolter opened scoring for Alfred University in the second half with a three-point shot. AU led for the first six minutes of the second half before Heidelberg took the lead back. A 15-0 run by the Student Princes had the Saxons trailing by as many as eight points. Heidelberg relied on late shots to ultimately distance their lead and secure the win.
Alfred University will next host St. John Fisher University on Friday at 7:30 PM.
