AURORA, NY - The Alfred University women's volleyball team finished the Wells College Tri-Match, 1-1 after a pair of extra-set matches against Penn State Altoona and Wells College on Saturday.
The Saxons (11-13, 5-3 Empire 8) fought hard but fell short to Penn State Altoona (14-10, 8-1Â AMCC) in five sets 17-25, 25-20, 18-25, 27-25, 10-15 during the opening match on Saturday. They closed out the tri-match with an 11-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 win over Wells College (12-16, 5-4 AMCC).
"It was great to end our regular conference season on a win. We'll use this as momentum as we move onto the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament on Tuesday," Head Coach
Mike Honeycutt said.
Match One
Alfred University – 2 | Penn State Altoona – 3
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led the Saxons with 20.0 points, made up of 19 kills and one ace.
Delaney Sims (Bogart, GA/George Walton Academy) was second on the team in points with 16.0 points from 11 kills, four aces, and two block assists. She recorded 14 digs and 36 set assists while hitting an impressive .435 with only one error on her 23 attacks.
Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) had the match-high in digs at 23, she also recorded one set assist and one ace in the match.
Match Two
Alfred University – 3 | Wells College – 1
Three Saxons had double-digit scoring as Malone led the way with 20.0 points, all coming from kills. Malone also had 12 digs.
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) followed, scoring 12.0 points that consisted of 10 kills and two aces while recording 10 digs as well.
Fiona McNeil (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) closed out the double-digit scoring with 10.5 points, including nine kills, one solo block and two block assists.
Madeline Stein (Surprise, AZ/Willow Canyon) came into the game during the third set to record 10 set assists and 3 digs to help the team bring home a win from the day.
#5 Alfred University will next compete on the road in the Empire 8 Tournament against #4 Nazareth University on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
