Men's Soccer Edged Out on Penalty Kicks In E8 Semifinal

ROCHESTER, NY - The Alfred University Men's Soccer Team came up short in penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods.

The Saxons were led by Matthew Osmundson (Draper, UT/Juan Diego Catholic) who had eight saves on the night. Chase Freeland (Hornell, NY/Hornell) had two shots with one being on goal for AU.

"The roller coaster of the season finished on a downturn at St. John Fisher University with an overtime tie ending on a penalty shootout loss." Head Coach Tracy Blake said. "Very proud of how we developed this year, especially in the playoffs."

Neither team was able to get much going offensively on the night, but both had chances to score the games first goal. Fisher started out hot in the first half, but a few great saves from Osmundson kept the game knotted at 0-0. Alfred saw their best scoring chance of the first half go just wide after a shot from Juan Jose Menendez Gutierrez (Villanueva Cañada, Madrid, Spain/Woodstock Academy). After the halftime break, Fisher had a few more chances inside the box but was thwarted by the Saxon defense. Stellar defense from Sai Baraka (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) in the second half and helped to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Late in regulation, William Moore (Stormville, NY/John Jay) hit a shot which was headed to the top left corner of the goal, but the Fisher goalkeeper was able to make a spectacular save. Regulation and both overtimes ended scoreless after 110 minutes of play and in the end St. John Fisher was able to pull out a 5-3 win in penalty kicks.

"We are a young team and with a strong recruiting class, I expect us to go even further next year" Blake said.

The Alfred University Men's Soccer Team's loss in the E8 playoffs marks their last game of the season, but the Saxons will look to return once again in 2024.
