ALFRED, NY – For the fourth consecutive season, the Alfred University women's soccer team has reached the Empire 8 Tournament following a 0-0 draw against Hartwick College on Saturday night from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (4-4-6, 2-0-5 Empire 8) took a moment to recognize their senior class competing in their final collegiate seasons, which includes
Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia),
Shelby Beardsley (Fillmore, NY/Fillmore Central),
Abby Wilson (Greece, NY/Odyssey Academy) and
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central).
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) recorded 2 shots on goal.
Claire Squicciarini (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) finished the game with 2 shots, 1 of which were on goal.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) recorded her 13th career shutout, tying
Sammy Jo Shanahan '17 for 4th in program history.
"It's great to earn a spot in the postseason!" Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "I want to congratulate the seniors on everything they have accomplished over the past four years. We are looking forward to getting back to work Monday to finish conference play strong."
Both defenses played well to open the first half, as neither side allowed a shot across the first 15 minutes of action.
Jodean Bray (Bovina Center, NY/Delaware Academy) was the first Saxon to record a shot on goal before AU went into halftime with a 0-0 tie. The Saxons found more offensive opportunities in the second half, as 5 different players forced a shot in the span of 12 minutes. The Hawks were limited to just 2 shots on goal in the final half of play before the final horn clinched Alfred University's berth into the postseason.
Alfred University will next wrap up their regular season at home against Nazareth University on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
