ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team wrapped up their regular season with a 2-0 loss to Nazareth University on Wednesday from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (4-5-6, 2-1-5 Empire 8) defended 18 shots from the Golden Flyers (6-4-6, 5-0-3 Empire 8), 11 of which were on goal.
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) finished the game with a team-high 3 shots with 1 being on goal.
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) and
Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) each had close scoring opportunities for the Saxons, totaling 2 shots with 1 being on goal.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) picked up 9 saves for AU.
"We had a tough first half, but I felt like we put together some good opportunities in the second half," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "We're looking forward to getting back to work in preparation for the Empire 8 Tournament."
The Golden Flyers set the tone early in the opening half, scoring in the 2nd minute of action to take the lead.
Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) was the first Saxon to record a shot on goal during the 6th minute of play. Nazareth found an additional opening moments later to extend their lead over Alfred University. The defense for rejected the Golden Flyers' next 7 shots before going into halftime with a 2-0 deficit.
The Saxons played well in the second half, holding the Golden Flyers without a shot attempt across the final 26 minutes of action. A total of 7 different players for AU recorded a shot in the final half before the clock ran out on a potential comeback.
Alfred University will next compete on the road in the Empire 8 Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday.
