HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team shut out Houghton University as part of a 2-0 conference win on Wednesday evening from Burke Field.
The Saxons (4-4-5, 2-0-4 Empire 8) limited the Highlanders (6-7-1, 3-3 Empire 8) to just 3 shots on goal as part of their winning efforts.
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) was credited with a goal and an assist.
Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) scored her second goal of the fall season.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) picked up 3 saves as part of the shutout win for the Saxons.
"It was very big for us to come out early and get the lead," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "The defense played well again, limiting the chances for Houghton. We are very excited to get back to work for Saturday night's game, where we get to celebrate the efforts of our senior class."
The Saxons wasted no time setting the tone offensively in the first half, as Scanlan opened scoring during the 2nd minute of action to give AU the early advantage. Alfred University recorded 3 additional shots and a corner kick attempt before a pass from Scanlan to Young reached the back of the net to extend the lead in the 17th minute of play. The defense played well for the Saxons, holding the Highlanders without a shot on goal through the first 30 minutes of action before going into the break with a 2-0 lead. Three different Saxons recorded shots on goals in the second half, while Houghton didn't record a shot on goal through the final 25 minutes of play before the final horn secured the win for AU.
Alfred University will next celebrate Senior Night on Saturday against Hartwick College with the first half scheduled to begin at 7:15 PM.
