HOUGHTON, NY - The Alfred University women's tennis team continued their hot start to the season with a 8-1 win over Lycoming College on Tuesday afternoon.
"I think we're on a bit of a revenge tour this year," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "Our returners are fired up about how some of the matches went last year. We walk on the court expecting to win this year and I love that mentality."
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and Eve Liu (Yantai, China/Wilbraham and Monson Academy) got the Saxons (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) off to an early lead from No. 2 doubles, not allowing a single point in their win. Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) performed well from No. 1 doubles, winning 8-2 to extend the advantage for AU. Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) rounded out doubles play from No. 3 with an 8-3 victory.
In singles action, Youngberg was the first to record a win for the Saxons in 6-0, 6-1 fashion from No. 4. Zabihailo clinched the victory for Alfred University from the top spot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Saxons continued to play with a winning mentality, as Call, Giordano, and Liu all picked up singles wins to conclude the afternoon.
"We're excited to continue this momentum on Thursday against Pitt-Bradford," Crouch said. "We have to bring the same energy and swagger into Thursday like we did today!"
Alfred University will next look for their third straight victory when they travel to face Pitt-Bradford on Thursday with matches scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
