HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team opened Empire 8 action on Friday evening during a road contest at Houghton University, falling in three sets.
The Saxons (5-9, 0-1 Empire 8) lost in three sets, 17-25, 16-25, 24-26 to the Highlanders (5-9, 2-1 Empire 8). They were led by the efforts of
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo). She totaled 13.0 points, tying a match-high mark on Friday. Chun got points from her 10 kills and three service aces. Chun had a double-double on the night by adding a team and match-high 14 digs while tacking on one set assist.
Casey Grange (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) followed with a match-high 11 kills, tying with two Houghton players. Grange totaled 12.5 points as she added an ace and a block assist. She also had double-digit digs with 12.
Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) added 13 digs while acing serves three times on the evening.
MyKayla Deyarmin (Smethport, PA/Smethport Area) led AU in set assists with 19.
The Saxons, after dropping both the first and second set, fought back after being down in the third set to a 24-22 lead after a Grange kill and an Ortiz ace. Unfortunately, those would go on to be the Saxons' final points of the evening as Houghton closed out the match with a 4-0 run.
