ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team celebrated their Saxon-For-Saxon outing with a 9-0 win over Medaille University on Friday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.
The Saxons (8-1, 3-1 Empire 8) continue to climb up the all-time records, as
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) became just the fifth player in program history to eclipse 20 victories in a single season.
"I always love the Saxon-For-Saxon matches," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "It's fun for our team to look up and see all the support from their classmates and friends. The atmospheres are always awesome. We'd like to thank SAAC and all the student-athletes that came out and supported us."
Following a 3-0 advantage in doubles,
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) was the first to score for the Saxons in singles action, winning 6-0, 6-1 from the top spot.
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) clinched the match for AU following a 6-1, 6-2 victory from No. 3.
Eve Liu (Yantai, China/Wilbraham and Monson Academy) picked up her eighth singles victory of the season from No. 3 in 6-1, 6-2 fashion. Youngberg played well from No. 4, winning her sixth consecutive singles match, 6-2, 6-2.
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) both won in convincing fashion to round out the afternoon for the Saxons and secure the sweep.
"I'm excited for the match tomorrow against Houghton," Crouch said. "That is another team that bested us last year and we'll be looking for some revenge. Go Saxons!"
Alfred University will next face a quick turnaround when they travel to face Houghton University on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
