FREDONIA, NY – A dominant performance in singles and doubles action for the Alfred University women's tennis team resulted in a 9-0 win over Fredonia State on Saturday afternoon from the Steele Hall Tennis Courts.
The victory for the Saxons (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) marks their first season opener victory dating back to the 2014-15 season.

Jordan Crouch said. "It was a great result today as we got to see success up and down the board. There are some things we can still work on, but I'm so excited for the rest of the year with this group. A special shoutout to Alina for picking up her first two wins in a big way and for Claire and Alexis cheering us along from start to finish. I can't wait for Monday to get back at it again."
The pairings of
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and
Eve Liu (Yantai, China/Wilbraham and Monson Academy), as well as
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) in doubles action resulted in wins, as the Saxons entered singles play with a 3-0 advantage.
Youngberg picked up her second win from No. 4 singles in 6-1, 6-0 fashion, clinching the win for Alfred University. The Saxons continued to perform well throughout the afternoon, as Gwozdz won from No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Zabihailo earned her first collegiate singles victory from the top spot in singles play in 6-0, 6-2 fashion. Liu played well from No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) didn't allow a single point from No. 5 to complete the sweep for the Saxons.
Alfred University will next return home to host Lycoming College on Tuesday with matches beginning at 4:00 PM.
