ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team fought hard in a narrow 1-0 loss to SUNY Oneonta on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (1-1, 0-0 Empire 8) finished with eight corner kick opportunities, while the Red Dragons (2-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) put across 11 shots, six of which were on goal.
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) and
Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) each finished with one shot on goal.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) ended with five saves for AU.
"We were unable to capitalize on our corner kicks which really cost us," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "Offensively, we haven't been able to get much going. I think that falls on the coaching staff more than anything. We need to do a better job at getting the team more prepared on the offensive end."
The Saxons defense played well throughout the first half, allowing only two shots on goal. Despite seven corner kick opportunities for Alfred University, they entered halftime with a scoreless draw. The Red Dragons found their lone goal of the game during the 53rd minute, as the Saxons trailed 1-0. Alfred put across two more shots before the final horn, as time ran out on a potential comeback.
"We have a week to prepared for a very good U of R team," Yanni said. "As I mentioned before, we need to figure out how to produce more chances on the offensive side of things. The coaching staff needs to really put in some work to sort things out to help us put a complete 90 minutes together."
Alfred University will next prepare for a road matchup against the University of Rochester next Saturday at 12:00 PM.
