Women's Soccer Comes Up Short vs Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY - A second half scoring effort for the University of Rochester led to a 5-1 win over the Alfred University women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon from Fauver Stadium.

The Saxons (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8) faced 21 shots, 11 of which were on goal. The Yellowjackets (3-0-1, 0-0 Liberty League) had all eight of their corner kick attempts rejected by the AU defense.

Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) recorded Alfred's lone goal. Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) was credited with her first assist of the season.

"Rochester was a very talented team," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "Coming into the game, we knew it was going to be a tough challenge. Unfortunately, we made a few small mistakes in the first half, which they capitalized on and that put us in an early deficit. It was a game where they really exposed some things that we need to work on."

Rochester was the first to get on the scoreboard, as a shot to the right side found its way to the back of the net in the third minute of action. The Saxons quickly retaliated when Palmgreen rebounded a shot off the crossbar to equalize the score. The Yellowjackets regained the lead after a tipped save from Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy). The Yellowjackets extended their lead in the 25th minute before AU entered halftime with a 3-1 deficit.

The Saxons successfully defended Rochester's first three shots to open the second half before scoring, as AU trailed 4-1. Alfred University put across three shots of their own in the second half but couldn't cut the deficit before the final horn went off.

"It will be nice to get back on the field Wednesday," Yanni said. "We will continue to work on this in our offensive scheme to try and get our offense moving in a better direction."

Alfred University will next travel to face Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday with the match scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
