ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team opened up day one of its Saxon Classic on Friday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena with a 3-0 loss to William Smith College.
The Saxons (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) dropped the first set, 15-25 before rebounding to two close sets, dropping the second, 21-25 and the third 22-25.
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) led the Saxons in in five statistical categories. She had a team-high 13.0 points from a team-best nine kills and four service aces. She hit a match-high .389 with only two errors on her 18 attempts. Chun also led the defense with 14 digs.
Delaney Sims (Bogart, GA/George Walton Academy) added 11 digs and posted a team-high 18 assists while scoring 3.0 points from one kill, one ace and on solo block.
MyKayla Deyarmin (Smethport, PA/Smethport Area) had a team-high three blocks with two assisted stops and one solo while adding two kills for 4.0 points.
Casey Grange (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) was second on the team in points with 8.0 from eight kills.
In the second set, the Saxons were down 20-17 to the Herons (1-0, 0-0 Liberty League) before making a 4-2 push, bringing the score within one after three kills from Grange and one from Chun, making it a 22-21 advantage for William Smith. Two attack errors from the Saxons and a block closed out the set and the comeback, going into the third.
The end of the third set saw a lot of excitement as the Herons looked to close out the evening, facing a 24-18, set/match point. Chun and Grange had back-to-back kills, followed by a Sims ace and a William Smith attack error, bringing the score within two, 24-22. The visitors picked up the win with a kill to take the 3-0 win on the next point.
The Saxons are back in action on Saturday when they host SUNY Potsdam at 11:00am and then SUNY Canton at 5:00pm.
