ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team came up short in their 3-0 loss to SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday night from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (2-3-1, 0-0 Empire 8) faced 17 shots, four of which were on goal. The Knights (4-1, 0-0 SUNYAC) were credited with five corner kick attempts.
Christian Moon (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) finished with a team-high three shots.
Ian Ashworth (Hornell, NY/Hornell) recorded AU's lone shot on goal.
"I'm very happy and excited with our non-conference play to this point in the season," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "Today was likely one game too many over a short period of time, however, the boys are eager to get on the pitch for some Empire 8 competition. SUNY Geneseo is a good team and with our injuries and rotation, I think we competed well and we're ready for what's next. Go Saxons and swords forward!"
The Knights set the tone early with a goal during the 11th minute, putting the Saxons in a 1-0 deficit. Alfred University successfully defended SUNY Geneseo's next six shots before the Knights found the back of the net just before entering halftime with a 2-0 advantage. The defense for AU played well in the second half, but a final goal in the closing minutes for SUNY Geneseo secured the game.
Alfred University will next begin the Empire 8 portion of their season when they travel to face Utica University on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
