ALFRED. NY – The early scoring efforts of Nazareth College resulted in a 19-4 win over the Alfred University women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (2-6, 0-2 Empire 8) finished 10-of-15 in clear attempts, while forcing the Golden Flyers (3-6. 1-0 Empire 8) to 14 turnovers.
Alfred University was led by the efforts of
Amelia Booth (Staatburg, NY/FDR), who finished with all four goals across a team-high eight shots on goal.
Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) dished two assists.
Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) totaled 16 saves for AU.
"I told the team I was very proud of them and at no point in time did anyone check out or quit," Head Coach
Johanna McCormick said. "All 12 players remained in the game the full 60 minutes. They kept the intensity up and fought until the very end. We were pushing the ball to the cage and looking for a shot in the last 10 seconds of the game. I am incredibly proud of my team and their hard work and dedication to one another. Today, all of them learned a life lesson: When things get tough, you don't give up. You continue to follow through and execute your game plan to the best of your ability."
The Golden Flyers compiled five early goals in the first quarter before a goal from Booth put the Saxons on the scoreboard. Two additional goals from Nazareth left Alfred University trailing 8-1 entering the second quarter. The Golden Flyers scored six unanswered goals in the second quarter to carry a 14-1 advantage going into halftime.
The Saxons were the first to strike in the second half, as a pass from Turner to Booth found its way to the back of the net. The Golden Flyers answered with two goals of their own before Booth scored again, marking her eighth consecutive game with three or more goals in a single contest. Booth scored once more in the fourth quarter, but three goals from the Golden Flyers distanced their lead and ultimately sealed the game.
"We'll continue to work to get our team healthy and find our stride as we progress towards our next Empire 8 contest," McCormick said.
Alfred University will face a quick turnaround when they travel to play Hartwick College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
