Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

High-Scoring Affair Sends Hartwick Past Women's Lacrosse, 20-11

HARTWICK, NY – A quick start for the Alfred University women's lacrosse team wasn't enough, as they came up short in a 20-11 loss to Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon from Wright Stadium.

The Saxons (2-7, 0-3 Empire 8) faced 38 shots on goal, while forcing the Hawks (5-4, 2-1 Empire 8) to 13 turnovers.

Alfred University was led by the efforts of Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR), who totaled six points from three goals and three assists. Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) finished with three goals along with one assist. Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) recorded two goals to go with three assists. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) picked up 18 saves for AU.

"We got more of the team involved in the offense than normal and the score was spread among the team," Head Coach Johanna McCormick. "The younger members of the team picked up the offense when Amelia was shut off. This shows growth in our team. Hailey and Maddie came to play."

The Saxons set the tone offensively in the early moments of the first quarter, as a goal from Booth gave AU the early lead. An assist from Turner to Stroh extended the lead for Alfred University. After Hartwick scored their first goal, Booth quickly answered with her second goal of the afternoon. The Hawks scored twice to tie the game before Turner found the back of the net to take the lead back for AU. Two additional goals from Hartwick were answered by Turner's second goal of the game, as both sides were tied 5-5 entering the second quarter.

The Hawks jumped out to a quick lead in the second quarter after rattling off five consecutive goals. Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) opened scoring for the Saxons in the second quarter to cut the deficit. An additional goal from Hartwick was followed by a goal from Stroh, as the Saxons trailed 11-7 entering halftime.

Hartwick scored twice early in the third quarter before Booth scored again for Alfred University. The goal for Booth marked the ninth consecutive game in which she has totaled three or more goals with Alfred University. Madeline Shaw (Williamsville, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) found her first goal of the game with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter. The Hawks scored three more times before Turner found the back of the net for the Saxons, but the team still trailed 16-10 entering the fourth quarter. An additional goal from Shaw was met with three goals from Hartwick, as they distanced their lead and ultimately sealed the game.

"Finding our rhythm is important and after today it is evident that it is coming together," McCormick said. "The score today may not have reflected that, but the team is pulling together. We are working on staying healthy and looking forward to the Fredonia game."

Alfred University will look to get back into the win column when they travel to play Fredonia State University on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
