Women's Lacrosse Falls in Home Contest to Buffalo State, 11-5

ALFRED, NY – Early scoring from Buffalo State College resulted in an 11-5 victory over the Alfred University women's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (2-3) held the Bengals (3-2) to 0-for-4 in free position shots, while forcing 26 turnovers.

Alfred University was led by the efforts of Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR), who finished with a team-high three goals across seven shots. Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) each scored once. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) recorded 19 saves for AU.

"This is a game of numbers and our numbers were small," Head Coach Johanna McCormick said. "We are learning how to play within a smaller squad. Today, we are taking steps towards controlling the things we can control and continue to work on developing skills to control the things we cannot. The team did a great job today. They played hard from start to finish."

Following four opening goals from Buffalo State in the first quarter, the Saxons got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter thanks to a successful shot from Booth. The Bengals scored once more before Booth responded with her second goal of the game. Buffalo State found the back of the net again before an assist from Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) to Turner had the Saxons trailing 6-3 at the break.

The Bengals were the first to score in the second half before Booth completed the hat trick for AU. Buffalo State scored again in the closing minutes of the third quarter, as the Saxons trailed 8-4 entering the fourth quarter. Despite a goal from Call, the Bengals scored twice in the fourth quarter to distance their lead and secure the win.

"The five preseason games have reminded us that we need to continue to work on the fundamentals, which will help us control the midfield and set the game at our tempo," McCormick said.

Alfred University will next host Cazenovia College on Wednesday, March 30 at 4:00 PM.
