Cazenovia Slips Away From Women's Lacrosse, 10-9

ALFRED, NY – Late scoring from Cazenovia College led to a 10-9 loss for the Alfred University women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (2-4) totaled 25 shots on goal, while forcing the Wildcats (2-4) to 19 turnovers.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led the Saxons with a game-high four goals and two assists while breaking the program record with 18 shots. Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) finished with three goals across four shots on goal. Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) recorded three points from two goals and an assist. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) totaled 12 saves for AU.

"The efforts of the team in last two minutes of the game says it all," Head Coach Johanna McCormick said. "Our ride broke their clear. This gave us the chance to tie the game in the closing seconds. Amelia scored, one official signaled a goal while the other trailing official called no goal. This would have taken the game into overtime. I couldn't be prouder of this squad and their effort, tenacity and grit. They pulled together and the effort was highly evident."

Cazenovia set the tone offensively in the early moments of the first quarter, scoring within the first minute of action. Krystina Gauer (Springwater, NY/Homeschool) tallied her first assist of the season from a pass to Turner to tie the game moments later. Two additional goals from the Wildcats were answered by an assist from Ceci Sherwood (Indiana, PA/Indiana) to Booth, as AU trailed 3-2 entering the second quarter.

Stroh opened scoring for the Saxons in the second quarter to equalize the score. Cazenovia took a brief lead before Turner recorded her second goal of the game. The Wildcats scored once more before Booth found an opening in the closing seconds of the first half, as neither side entered held an advantage entering halftime.

The Saxons secured their first lead of the game early in the third quarter thanks to a goal from Stroh. Cazenovia retaliated with two goals of their own before Booth scored once again for AU, marking her sixth consecutive game with three or more goals.

The Wildcats took an early lead in the fourth quarter following two consecutive goals. Booth scored for the Saxons to cut the deficit with 9:30 remaining in the game. Cazenovia scored once more before an assist from Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) to Stroh had the Saxons trailing by one score with 1:27 left in regulation. A shot from Booth in the closing seconds reached the back of the net but was ultimately overturned to eliminate any opportunity to advance to overtime.

"On Saturday, preseason is over," McCormick said. "We need to apply all the lessons we learned from the last six games and continue to define who we are. We are a team that never gives up."

Alfred University will next open Empire 8 competition when they travel to face Russell Sage College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
