Men's Basketball Steps Up to Defeat Elmira in 75-59 Road Victory

ELMIRA, NY – A strong shooting performance from the Alfred University men's basketball team resulted in a 75-59 win over Elmira College on Tuesday evening from the Speidel Gymnasium.

Five Saxons (13-8, 6-6 Empire 8) finished with double-digit points, while the team out-rebounded the Soaring Eagles (5-16, 3-9 Empire 8) by a 42-33 margin in the victory.

"I thought we did a really nice job defensively," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "Elmira is a really well-coached team and runs a great offense. I was proud of our guys and their effort on defense."

Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led the Saxons with his eighth double-double performance of the season, finishing with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) totaled 14 points and six assists. Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) totaled 12 points, shooting 4-of-9 from three-point range. Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) notched his fourth double-double of the season that consisted of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Alfred University relied on Schmidt in the opening moments of the first half, as he scored the team's first five points. A three-point shot from Schmidt gave AU their first lead of the game at the 15:45 mark. An 11-0 run by the Soaring Eagles was ended by another three-point shot by Schmidt. Five straight points from Kenneth Allison Jr (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) started a 10-0 run for the Saxons. Enders knocked down a three-point shot in the final minute of the first half, as Alfred University led 36-30 at halftime.

Marshall contributed with five points during an 8-0 run by the Saxons to extend their lead to 15 points with 15:02 remaining in the game. Back-to-back three-point shots from Enders and Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) played a role in protecting AU's lead with 10:12 remaining. While Elmira continued to hit their shots, the Saxons finished with 39 second half points to hang on for the win.

"Hartwick will be another tough game," Kaempffe said. "They play hard and road wins are always tough. We are excited to get back to work tomorrow and prepare for them."

Alfred University will next travel to play Hartwick College on Friday with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 PM.
