Men's Basketball Outplays Nazareth in 69-55 Victory

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team extended their winning streak to four games with a 69-55 victory over Nazareth College on Friday night from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (16-8, 9-6 Empire 8) shot 52.4 percent from the field, while limiting the Golden Flyers (20-4, 12-3 Empire 8) to 14.3 percent from three-point range.

Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) led the Saxons with 11 points, six boards and two assists. Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) finished with a team-high 13 points along with seven boards. Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) and Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) each totaled 10 points.

"I thought we defended at a high level tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "Nazareth is a great program, with great players, and they're very well-coached. We have a lot of respect for them."

A three-point shot from Durkin opened scoring for the Saxons in the first half. Schmidt hit back-to-back three-point shots for Alfred University, extending their lead to eight points with 8:25 remaining in the first half. Another three-point shot from Durkin sparked a 7-0 run for the Saxons. The Golden Flyers scored four late points, but Alfred held a 33-24 lead at the break. Each team traded shots throughout the early stages of the second half, but a jump shot from Bowen at the 5:06 mark led to a 7-0 run, as the Saxons led by as many as 11 points with 3:15 remaining. The Saxons hit nine of their final ten shots from the free throw line to secure the win.

"We're looking forward to playing Utica University tomorrow," Kaempffe said. "They are a great team. We are also excited for our fans that we get another home game next week on Tuesday in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament."

Alfred University will next host Utica University on Saturday as they recognize and celebrate their senior class in their final regular season home game. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
