Women's Hoops Earns 36-Point E8 Win Over Keuka, 68-32

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team earned its second Empire 8 win in a row as they welcomed Keuka College to the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena on Tuesday night and sent them home after a 68-32 win.

The Saxons (9-10, 4-6 Empire 8) had three quarters in which they doubled-up on the scoring efforts of the Wolves (1-16, 0-9 Empire 8). They had a 20-7 lead after the first quarter, outscored the Wolves in the third, 14-5 and again in the fourth, 22-11. The only Keuka lead was after Jenna Lamere made a free throw less than two minutes into the start of the game for a 1-0 lead. Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) responded with a 3-pointer off an assist from Rebecca Jewett (Nyack, NY/Nyack) just 23 seconds later for the game's only lead change.

"I was really pleased with our focus and energy right from the get-go. We had some great looks early, particularly from 3-point area, that didn't fall, but we were aggressive crashing the glass and creating some second chances opportunities," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "Our defense did a pretty good job in the first half and then really did a great job in the second. We able to force turnovers not only in the press, but also in the half court thanks to our overall activity level and aggressiveness switching on the perimeter. That allowed us to get out and run and I really liked our unselfishness in our transition conversions tonight.

AU had three players in double-digits for scoring, led by Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) and her game-high 14 points and game-high seven rebounds. Flint tacked on 13 points while Felicia Stewart (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) added 10.

The Saxons had nine players record at least one steal on the evening, totaling 10 takeaways as they were led by Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) with two. Karly Welty (Portville, NY/Portville Central) led the team in assists, being credited with four of the team's 16 assists on their 27 buckets.

"Really pleased with our commitment to getting better every second within this game, which is something we've struggled with this year. We treated each possession as it's own battle and worked hard to play up to our standards," Coach Moskowitz said. "We'll watch some film and make some adjustments going into tomorrow."

The Saxons have a quick turnaround as they will next travel to Keuka Park, NY to have a rematch with the Wolves on Wednesday, February 2 at 5:30pm.
