Pitt.-Bradford Takes One Event as Saxons Claim a Convincing Dual-Meet Win

BRADFORD, PA – The Alfred University men's swimming team traveled for a mid-week dual meet on Thursday to defeat the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 150-39.

The Saxons won all of the events except for two against the Panthers. "This was a good effort by everyone," Head Coach Brian Striker '00 said. "We had some great swims, while being able to have everyone get into some off events. It is rare for us to have a mid-week meet, it was great to see that everyone was able to make adjustments and perform well!"

AU got things started with three relays putting up top times in the medley relay as one was exhibitioned, but due to a Panther disqualification, left no points for the hosts after the first event. Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit), Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington), Giuseppe Piede (Dunellen, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) combined for a time of 1:42.99 for the first Saxon victory of the day.

Wade LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) and Colin Schultz (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) were uncontested in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Wade swam a 12:11.91 in the win while Schultz was less than 10 seconds behind with a 12:21.51.

Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle as Pitt.-Bradford got their first points with a second place finish in the event. The Saxons went one-two-three in the 50-yard freestyle as Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/St. Andrew's) led with a 23.24. Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) picked up the second place finish with a 23.29 and Volaski closed it with a 24.05. The Panthers' lone win was in the 200-yard individual medley, edging Piede with a 2:13.39 compared to the Saxon time of 2:13.71.

The Saxons had another three-spot sweep with William swimming a 55.49 in the 100-yard butterfly, followed by Terrazas (56.22) and Alessandro (56.34). Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) got the next gold with a time of 52.56 in the 100-yard freestyle.

William got the W in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.15 before four Saxons took the top spots in the 500-yard freestyle. Tuttle led the way with a 5:28.47 as Piede (5:32.70) and Aidan Kirk (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) (5:58.66) followed in scoring position. Tucker Jones (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) posted the next top time but his placing was omitted on exhibition as the overall fifth place finisher for the Panthers earned fourth place points. Jones reached the wall with a time of 6:08.10 while the Pitt.-Bradford swimmer finished with a 6:08.72.

Volaski (1:03.90), Fernando (1:05.40) and Shea Leonard (Avon, NY/Avon) (1:16.82) swept the last individual event of the evening, claiming first, second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Saxon A-team of Alessandro, Terrazas, Tuttle and Fernando combined for a time of 1:32.03 to get the final win of the night.

The Saxons will next travel to Fredonia to face off against the host Blue Devils as well as the Yellowjackets of University of Rochester in a tri-meet on Saturday, November 12. The meet is set to start at noon.
