Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Marshall Surpasses 1,000 Points in Dominant Win Over Roos

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team walked away with an 84-53 non-conference win over SUNY Canton on Friday evening, opening up the Special Tees Tip-Off Classic at Alfred State College's Orvis Activities Center.

The Saxons (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) had four players in double-digits as Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) led with 15 points, hitting 5-of-7 3-pointers and Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) broke the 1,000-point milestone, scoring 12 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Marshall was six points shy of the grand coming into the neutral site contest.

"I was really happy with our intensity and unselfishness tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "Our guys played well together."

Joining Enders and Marshall were Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) who tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) with 11 points. 14 players in total scored a point for the Saxons on Friday evening.

The Saxons got an early, 11-0 lead before the Roos (1-1, 0-0 North Atlantic) finally got on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws. The Saxon defense never let up as SUNY Canton couldn't get into a groove to put together any scoring runs while the AU offense kept applying pressure until going into halftime with a 26-point lead, the highest of the half, off a pair of Marshall free throws, making it a 46-20 score going into the break.

AU scored the first points in the second half with made free throws from Curran, upping the advantage to 28 points. The Saxons earned their highest point lead off a score from inside of the paint by Bowen, making it a 71-34, 37-point lead. Shortly after the jumper, the Saxons subbed out their entire lineup allowing other players to step on the court where they didn't lose momentum, keeping a lead of more than 30 points for the majority of the remaining clock.

"We're excited for a really tough and well-coached team in SUNY Poly tomorrow," Coach Kaempffe said.

The Saxons will next close out the Special Tees Tip-Off Classic on their home court inside of the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena on Saturday, November 12. They will take on the Wildcats of SUNY Poly at 4:30pm, right after the matchup between SUNY Canton and Alfred State College at 2:00pm.
