ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team fell to Utica University, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (4-10, 1-4 Empire 8) lost the three sets, 17-25, 21-25, 17-25.
Casey Grange (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) led the Saxons with 12 kills and an ace for 13.0 points while tacking on 15 digs.
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) followed with 11.0 points and a team-high two aces and 17 digs.
Corinne Ferguson (Chesapeake, OH/Chesapeake) and
Jade K Wolfer (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) both added double-digit digs figures as Ferguson had 14 and Wolfer had 10.
Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) recorded 22 set assists.
Fiona McNeil (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) added 4.0 points as both her and Ferguson had four kills each.
AU was down 13-12 in the first set before the Pioneers (13-7, 3-2 Empire 8) went on a 10-1 run to hold a 10-point lead over the Saxons. AU pushed back with a 4-1 run to make it 24-17 in favor of the visitors but the push back was extinguished with a Pioneer kill to end the set.
After an early lead change in favor of the Saxons in the beginning of the second set, they built a lead of 12-8, following a 5-1 run. The next handful of rallies were back-and-forth until Utica put together a 7-1 run for a 21-19 lead. A 4-2 Utica run closed out the second set. Utica had control of the third set as they were up, 19-10 before the Saxons were able to push back.
The Saxons will next travel to Hartwick College on Friday, October 14 for a 6:00pm Empire 8 match.
