ALFRED, NY – Goals in the second half for both sides led to a 1-1 draw for the Alfred University women's soccer team against Fredonia State University on Tuesday night from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (6-5-5, 3-1-4 Empire 8) finished with 15 shots, five of which were on goal. The Blue Devils (2-9-5, 0-7-2 SUNYAC) were unsuccessful across their eight corner kick attempts.
Claire Squicciarini (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) scored her first goal of the season from her one attempt.
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) was responsible for a team-high four shots, with one being on target.
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) picked up six saves for AU.
"These five seniors have been great for our program," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "They embody what it means to be a student-athlete here at Alfred University. They have been vital to help this program get to the point we are at. Their impact will continue to prove positive for years to come."
The Saxons defense was pressured early on in the opening half, rejecting the Blue Devils' first six shots inside the first 20 minutes of action.
Sophia Carretto (Canisteo, NY/Hornell) put a shot on goal in the final minutes of the first half before Fredonia picked it up, as both sides entered halftime without a goal. A free kick from Squicciarini in the second half put the Saxons on the scoreboard for the early 1-0 lead. Moments later, the Blue Devils found an opportunity to equalize the score. A series of impressive saves from Fuller in the final minutes allowed Alfred University to come away with the draw.
"This is a big game for us on Saturday," Yanni said. "All we can do is continue to work on our play and team health."
Alfred University will next travel to Nazareth College for their regular season finale on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
