ROCHESTER, NY - A defensive effort from the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 0-0 draw against St. John Fisher University on Saturday night at Growney Stadium.
The Saxons (6-5-4, 3-1-4 Empire 8) successfully defended 16 shots and six corner kicks against the Cardinals (6-2-6, 4-0-3 Empire 8) in their efforts.
Sophia Carretto (Caniseto, NY/Hornell) and
Katelyn Rieger (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) were the lone Saxons to record a shot on goal.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) picked up eight saves. Barnard-Pratt has totaled eight shutout performances in goal for AU this fall, becoming the first player in program history to do so since
Jill Viggiani '97.
"Everyone on our team played great defense tonight," Graduate Assistant Coach
Danielle Perry said. "We battled for 90 minutes and earned an important point in conference play. Hopefully we can get everyone on the team healthy going into our final two games. We need to continue to work on our offense, but we are excited to be hone on Tuesday for Senior Day."
The Saxons defensive stood tall throughout the game, rejecting the Cardinals first three shots inside the first 10 minutes of action. Carretto was the first Saxon to be credited with a shot on goal in the 41st minute before both sides entered the break without a goal. The offense came out more aggressive in the second half for AU, but they could not capitalize on their corner kick opportunity in the 64th minute. Barnard-Pratt recorded three saves in the second half for Alfred University, including an important pickup in the final minute to secure the draw.
Alfred University will next host Fredonia for a non-conference matchup as part of their Senior Day on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
