Women's Soccer Holds On For Scoreless Draw vs Houghton

ALFRED, NY – A defensive battle for the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night at Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (6-5-3, 3-1-3 Empire 8) finished the game with 11 shots, three of which were on goal. The Highlanders (5-5-4, 2-2-2 Empire 8) were limited to three corner kick opportunities and one shot on goal.

Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) totaled a team-high five shots with two being on goal. Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) was responsible for two shots. Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) picked up her seventh shutout of the season, climbing to the second-highest mark in program history for a single season.

"Our defense played well tonight to keep Houghton off the board," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "We have to continue to work to find ways to get us opportunities in our offensive third and finish the opportunities we get."

Alfred University faced pressure on the defensive end early in the first half, rejecting Houghton's lone shot on goal inside the first three minutes of action. Scanlan was the first to put a shot on target for the Saxons during the 31st minute. AU attempted two more shots in the final minutes of the first half before entering halftime with a scoreless draw. Scanlan was responsible for Alfred's first three shots in the second half. The defense did not allow a single shot on goal in the second half, but the Saxons offense could not find the back of the net before the final horn.

Alfred University will next travel to face St. John Fisher University on Saturday with the first half scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM.
