Defense Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win Over Keuka

ALFRED, NY - A first half goal from Madison Lee (Dansville, NY/Dansville) for the Alfred University women's soccer team led to a 1-0 win over Keuka College on Wednesday evening from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (6-5-1, 3-1-1 Empire 8) finished the game with 10 shots, half of which were on goal. The defense limited the Wolves (2-6-4, 0-3-2 Empire 8) to just three shots on goal.

Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) ended the game with two shots with one being on goal. Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) had one shot on goal across a full 90 minutes. Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) picked up three saves in her fifth shutout performance of the season with AU.

"We really had to grind defensively in the second half to absorb their pressure to preserve the win," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "Our work rate really improved tonight in comparison to our last couple of outings."

The Saxons offense remained persistent throughout the first half, as four different players attempted a shot inside the first 25 minutes of action. A corner kick attempt from Julia Flaitz (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central) to Lee put the Saxons ahead 1-0 in the 33rd minute. The defense held Keuka to four shots in the first half before entering halftime with the 1-0 advantage. The second half held a similar tune for the Saxons, as they rejected all five shots from the Wolves to hold on for the win.

"Our work rate will continue to be the key to our play moving forward," Yanni said. "This is a good game to build off of."

Alfred University will next travel to face Hartwick College on Sunday with the match slated to begin at 2:00 PM.
