Women's Basketball Falls in Home Contest to #25 St. John Fisher

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team could not keep up offensively in their 67-28 loss to #25 St. John Fisher on Tuesday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (6-8, 1-4 Empire 8) drew 17 fouls, while holding the Cardinals (13-1, 5-1 Empire 8) to 38.1 percent from the field.

Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) led the Saxons with a team-high 10 points and seven rebounds. Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) finished with nine points and seven boards.

"We weren't able to score early and Fisher was, allowing them to set up their press and control the flow of the game from the starts," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "They really jumped on us early and put the clamps on us on the defensive end. I thought Raile, Anne, Felicia, and Sam really played some solid minutes tonight."

The Saxons scored early thanks to a three-point shot from Flint. St. John Fisher answered with a 14-0 run to lead by as many as 14 points. Late shots from the Cardinals gave them a 23-6 lead over the Saxons at the end of the first quarter. A 13-0 run from St. John Fisher was ended by a three-point shot from Leah Harkenrider (Hornell, NY/Hornell). Baskets from Flint and Ion in the later stages of the second quarter were answered by the Cardinals, as Alfred University trailed 39-13 at the break.

Both Flint and Ion recorded early baskets in the early moments of the third quarter, but the Saxons were only able to score one additional point across the last seven minutes of the third quarter, as the Cardinals extended their lead, 55-19. St. John Fisher outscored AU by a 12-9 margin in the fourth quarter, sealing the game.

"With Utica on the road up next, we will be focused on our defense trying to limit their inside-out game, and being poised against a few different presses and zones," Moskowtiz said.

Alfred University will next travel to face Utica College on Friday with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM.
