Overtime Heroics Sends Men's Basketball Past Hartwick, 81-74

ALFRED, NY – An overtime finish resulted in a 81-74 victory for the Alfred University men's basketball team over Hartwick College on Saturday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (9-4, 2-2 Empire 8) finished 39.1 percent from the field, while drawing 24 fouls against the Hawks (0-13, 0-5 Empire 8) in the win.

Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) led the Saxons with a career-high 17 points, making five shots from three-point range. Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) scored a career-high 15 points to go with nine boards. Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) finished with a season-high 13 points along with eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

"It was nice to see some shots go in tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "Hartwick is an incredibly well-coached team and they played very well. We have a lot of respect for them and how they compete."

Hartwick jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but a three-point shot from Durkin kept the Saxons within a one-point deficit. A successful three-point shot from Enders at the 13:39 mark of the opening half tied the game, 13-13. The Saxons put together a 13-0 run to lead by as many as 10 points. A brief 6-2 run by the Hawks narrowed their deficit, as the Saxons led 36-32 at halftime.

Quick shots from Curran and Durkin in the early moments of the second half extended Alfred's lead to a nine-point advantage. Hartwick responded with a 10-2 run, as the Saxons led by one point with 12:54 remaining in the second half. Consecutive three-point shots from Justin Phillips (Cleveland, OH/Shaker Heights) extended AU's lead. A 6-0 run by the Hawks tied the game with 29 seconds remaining in regulation and ultimately sent the game into overtime.

The Saxons relied on Enders for offensive support in overtime, as he scored the team's first eight points. Hartwick landed shots of their own, but 12 successful free throws for AU sealed the victory.

"We're excited to get rest and recover," Kaempffe said. "We have some tired legs, so we'll get these guys back to work next week for a great opponent in St. John Fisher."

Alfred University will next host St. John Fisher on Tuesday with tip-off taking place at 7:30 PM.
