Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saxons Clinch First Victory of the Season Versus Lancaster Bible

Alfred, NY- Standout performances from the Alfred University women's soccer team led to a 2-0 victory over Lancaster Bible College on Saturday from Donald H. Funk Field at Willis & Martha Herr Stadium.

The Saxons (1-0-1) compiled 16 shots in the win, 11 of which were on goal. AU also earned three corner kick opportunities.

"Our back line has played really well," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "They are all very prideful defenders and battle constantly throughout the game. Katline Cartwright reads the game very well and cleans up any mistakes that may occur in front of her."

Senior forward Karah Landries (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley Central) only needed one shot to find the back of the net for the Saxons. First-year midfielder Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) recorded her first collegiate goal. Junior goalkeeper Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) picked up her fifth career shutout victory with AU as a starter.

The Saxons offense remained persistent in the early stages of the opening half, forcing three shots on goal across the first 18 minutes. Defensively, AU did not surrender a single shot before halftime.

Alfred University found success in the second half, as a pass from first-year forward Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) to Landries gave the Saxons a 1-0 advantage. A corner kick opportunity for AU just 13 minutes allowed Solly to find an opening, ultimately clinching the victory.

"We have done well creating chances in the offensive third," Yanni said. "Our forwards continue to work on their movement and work rate. We also generated a lot of offense through Sierra Wilson and Mackenzie O'Brien getting up in the attack from the back. Today, Mackenzie set the tone for the team. Her discipline was superb."

The Saxons will look to maintain their momentum as they travel to play Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday at 2pm.
