MIDDLETOWN, PA- A defensive matchup for the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a scoreless draw versus Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon.
The Saxons (1-0-2) totaled nine shots, six of which were on goal. AU also successfully defended seven corner kicks from the Lions (1-0-1).
Sophomore midfielder
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) forced a team-high two shots, one of which was on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) picked up five saves while completing her second consecutive game without allowing a goal.
"The defense played very well again today," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "They continue to be the backbone of our play. Hannah really stepped up to make a couple good saves late in the game for us."
The defense for AU stood tall in the opening half, shutting down two corner kick opportunities from Penn State Harrisburg across the first 20 minutes of action. Alfred University became more persistent in the second half offensively, attempting two shots on goal within the opening three minutes. Despite three corner kick opportunities for the Saxons, each side remained scoreless at the end of regulation.
Fuller totaled two saves during the overtime periods to force the draw.
"We still have a lot to do on the offensive end," Yanni said. "We will continue to try and find ways for us to get better opportunities in the offensive third."
The Saxons will complete their four-game road trip on Wednesday against SUNY Brockport at 4pm.
