GENEVA, NY- The Alfred University women's soccer team remains high-spirited following their 6-0 loss to #2 nationally-ranked William Smith College on Wednesday from Cozzens Field.
The Saxons (3-1-2, 0-0-0 Empire 8) defended 32 shots from the Herons, 19 of which were on goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) finished with a season-high 13 saves. First-year midfielder
Claire Squicciarini (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) had the Saxons' lone shot on goal on the evening.
"There was a lot for us to take away from tonight's game," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "I think it's a perfect time of the year for us to have a game like this. It gives us time to fix things that were exposed tonight."
The defense for AU was tested early and often, as William Smith forced six shots across the first 20 minutes of action. A deflected shot for the Herons resulted in an opening to take the early lead. William Smith scored once more before the end of the first half, placing the Saxons in a 2-0 deficit at the break. The second half had a similar pace, as William Smith capitalized with four additional goals to distance their lead.
"Looking forward, University of Rochester is going to be another tough game for us," Yanni said. "It will be a good chance for us to rebound against another regionally-ranked team and fix some of our previous issues."
The Saxons will return home to host the University of Rochester on Saturday at 6pm.
