Women's Soccer Defeats King's College 3-1 in Home Opener

ALFRED, NY- Consistent play across both halves from the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 3-1 win over King's College on Saturday night from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (3-0-2, 0-0-0 Empire 8) finished with 11 shots, four of which were on goal. AU also only surrendered six shots in the victory over the Lions.

"We have been solid defensively up to this point in the season," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "It took us about 20 minutes to get organized. King's College was a very good team and challenged us, but we battled for 90 minutes and got a solid result."

Senior forward Karah Landries (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley Central) found the back of the net once for the Saxons on a team-high three shots. Sophomore defender Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) scored once across two shots. First-year forward Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) finished with a penalty kick goal to go with an assist.

The Saxons offense came out firing in the opening half, forcing five shots across the first 20 minutes of action. The defense rejected the Lions' only four shot attempts, as neither side found the back of the net before halftime.

AU wasted no time placing continuous pressure on King's defense in the second half, as a pass from Silverstein to Landries gave the Saxons a 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, a foul from King's led to Palmgreen scoring on a free kick from roughly 35 yards out.

Following a goal from King's, the Saxons drew a foul inside the Lions' penalty goal to set up Silverstein to score on a penalty kick. The defense did not allow a shot in the last 15 minutes of play, securing the victory.

"Moving into our next match, the quality of William Smith is going to be something that we haven't seen in my time here," Yanni said. "It is going to be a great experience for us to travel to a top five ranked team in the country."

The Saxons will travel to play William Smith College on Wednesday at 5pm.
