ALFRED, NY- The Alfred University men's soccer team completed their home-opener as part of the Bryan Karl Tournament, losing to D'Youville College by a 3-1 score on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (0-2-2) totaled 13 shots, three of which were on goal. AU also defended nine corner kicks against the Saints (4-0-0).
"We dug ourselves into a hole in the first half and couldn't get out of it," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "Still, I am very happy with our commitment. We just need to clean up some of the mistakes we made."
Junior midfielder
Andrew Carrillo Macias (Reno, NV/North Valley)Â found the back of the net for Alfred's lone goal. Sophomore forward
Henry Smith (Manassas, VA/Lancaster) forced a team-high three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper
Daniel Koenig (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) picked up nine saves.
Alfred University remained patient to open the first half, successfully defending D'Youville's first four shots. Three goals from the Saints forced the Saxons to play from behind, as they entered halftime with a 3-0 deficit.
AU cleaned up their play in the second half, as a pass from senior defender
Seamus Doyle (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) to Macias allowed the Saxons to get on the scoreboard. Alfred put across seven more shots in the second half but could not complete the comeback effort.
"Right now, we are being met with plenty of challenges," Blake said. "Between COVID protocols and injuries, we are focused on getting healthy. From there, our team will be in fair shape."
The Saxons will compete in the consolation match of the Bryan Karl Tournament on Sunday against SUNY Cobleskill at 11am.
