Alfred, NY- The Alfred University women's soccer team fought through two overtime periods during their season-opener, resulting in a 2-2 draw against Fredonia State University on Wednesday from University Stadium.
Alfred University (0-0-1) remained persistent on offense, totaling 19 shots, 13 of which were on goal. The Saxons also earned four corner kick opportunities.
"We still have some cleaning up to do in the offensive third," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "I'm optimistic that we will continue to improve. I thought our defense played really well against a team that presented a great front line."
First-year midfielder
Alyssa Smith (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) totaled a team-high six shots, finding the back of the net once for AU. First-year forward
Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) finished with four shots on goal, scoring once. Junior goalkeeper
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) was responsible for eight saves.
Sophomore Bri Grazen and first-year Katie Sellers each found the back of the net for the Blue Devils (0-0-1).
Fredonia set the pace offensively early on, attempting four shots in the first 18 minutes of the opening half before taking a 1-0 lead. The Saxons quickly retaliated, as a shot from Smith evened the score at the 21:00 mark. Less than 10 minutes later, a shot from Silverstein allowed Alfred University to enter halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
The Blue Devils tied the game in the opening minutes of the second half. Through both overtime periods, the Saxons defended a combined five shots and one corner kick opportunity to force the eventual draw.
"With a tough schedule ahead, we will continue to work on our attacking both from the midfield and the forwards," Yanni said. "We know we have to take the process day-by-day and improve on the small things we have been working on through the offseason."
The Saxons will remain on the road to play Lancaster Bible College on Saturday at 11:30am.
