Alfred Finishes Regular Season With 23-4 Rout of Keuka

Saxons, seeded third, will face No. 2 Nazareth in Empire 8 Semifinal Thursday

KEUKA PARK, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team finished the regular season in style, scoring the first 12 goals in a 23-4 rout of Keuka College, in Empire 8 action from the Jephson Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
 
The Saxons (6-2, 3-2 Empire 8) complete the regular season as the three seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament and will travel to Rochester to face No. 2 Nazareth on Thursday, May 6 at a time to be determined. Keuka (0-4, 0-4 Empire 8) is the fourth seed and will travel to face regular season champion and No. 1 seed St. John Fisher College on May 6 as well.
 
The Saxons enjoyed a 57-25 shot advantage and a 45-29 ground ball advantage. AU also won 26-of-31 faceoffs and were a perfect 22-for-22 in clear attempts. The Saxons went 1-for-4 in extra man opportunities, while Keuka was 2-for-5. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.
 
It was a career effort for sophomore attack Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton), who tallied a career-best 12 points, tallying six goals and assisting on six more. He was just two points shy of tying the single-game record, which is held by AU legend Joe Alberici, set in the 1990 season. Mosher also picked up four ground balls.
 
Sophomore attack Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) also had a strong performance, scoring five goals and two assists for seven points, picking up five ground balls. Junior attack Adrian Romero (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia), first year midfielder Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder), and junior attack Connor DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling) each tallied two goals. Sophomore attack Paul Forte (Greece, NY/Greece-Athena) and junior midfielder Jonathan Kay (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) tallied two points, scoring a goal and adding an assist each. Finishing the scoring, graduate midfielder Jake McNaney (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post), graduate midfielder Caleb DuBois (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora), senior midfielder Garrette Briggs (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), and sophomore midfielder Sean Laukaitis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) each got on the board with a goal. First year defender Mike DeSain (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), sophomore attack Trevor Gilliard (Greece, NY/Odyssey Academy), and sophomore midfielder Alex Nazarczyk (Corning, NY/Corning Painted-Post) each tallied an assist.
 
Defensively, Weber led with two caused turnovers, adding eight ground balls. Briggs led the team with 11 ground balls and was a perfect 19-for-19 on faceoffs. Sophomore midfielder Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) added four ground balls. In cage, junior goalie Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) picked up the win, stopping four shots in the first half. Sophomore goalie Eddie Rowley (Brockport, NY/Brockport) was busy in the second half, stopping 12 shots.
 
Seth Spurgeon led the Wolves with two goals. Brandon Smith and Nicholas Pipher each tallied a goal, with Pipher adding an assist. Jared Hurlbut made 18 saves in the losing effort.


The Saxons sprinted out early, with Mosher getting AU on the board two minutes in. The goals then came in bunches, with the Saxons scoring thrice in a 1:09 span for a 4-0 lead. In the final two minutes, Cartwright tallied a goal from Mosher, followed by a Mosher man-up tally, as the Saxons took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.
 
The scoring barrage continued, with the Saxons scoring five more goals for a commanding 12-0 lead. The Wolves finally responded, with Spurgeon tallying a man-up goal with 6:03 left in the first half. The Saxons then scored four straight, with Cartwright bookending the run as the Saxons held a 16-1 lead.
 
After Keuka scored their second goal in the third quarter, the Saxons ended the period with a pair of goals in the final 1:26, leading 18-2 heading into the final quarter. AU began the fourth with five goals, before Keuka peppered the Saxon reserves with shots late in the game, tallying a pair of goals to end the scoring.
