ALFRED, NY- A season-high seven shots on goal from the Alfred University women's soccer team wasn't enough, as they fell by a 3-1 score to Houghton College on Thursday from Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons (0-4, 0-4 Empire 8) earned nine corner kick opportunities, while the Highlanders (2-3, 1-2 Empire 8) only totaled one.
Alfred was guided by senior forward
Katline Cartwright (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy), who scored the team's lone goal. Â First-year defender
Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) finished with one assist. First-year
Jasmine Sims (Yorkshire, NY/Pioneer) and sophomore
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) combined for three saves for the Saxons.
The Saxons forced offensive pressure early, as their first two corner kick opportunities came within the first 20 minutes of the first half. Junior forward
Karah Landries (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley Central) found a brief opening for a shot, but it was ultimately saved by the Highlanders.
Houghton was the first to get on the board with a goal at the 32:30 mark. Alfred had one more corner kick opportunity before heading to halftime with a 1-0 deficit.
A corner kick from Palmgreen allowed Cartwright to score off a header in the early stages of the second half. The goal marked Alfred's first of the spring season. The Highlanders responded with two goals of their own in the second half to keep Alfred out of reach.
The Saxons will next conclude their regular season with a road match versus Nazareth College on Saturday from Golden Flyer Stadium at 12pm.
