Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Weber Secures Caused Turnovers Record In Matchup Versus Nazareth

ALFRED, NY- A strong second half from Nazareth College ended with a 17-7 win over the Alfred University men's lacrosse team on Tuesday from Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons (5-1, 2-1 Empire 8) were 21-of-22 on clear attempts, while the Soaring Eagles (3-5, 2-0 Empire 8) finished 17-of-18.

A game-high five caused turnovers for graduate defender Shane Weber (Hull, MA/Hull) resulted in the all-time program record, previously held by Jake Spadoni '13. Weber has earned 147 career caused turnovers with the Saxons, including 16 during the spring season. Weber initially tied the record at the 4:55 mark of the first quarter, and a disruptive play at the 10:41 mark in the following quarter secured the accomplishment.

"Shane played like an All-American today and has the numbers to back it up," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "He has been one of the best defenseman I've ever had the opportunity to work with. I believe Coach Dupree would say the same thing as the defensive coordinator."

The Saxons relied on the efforts of sophomore attack Paul Forte (Greece, NY/Greece Athena), who ended with three goals on seven shots, five of which were on goal. Sophomore attack Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton) found the back of the net on two occasions. Junior attack Connor DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling) and junior attack Noah Soriano (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) each scored a goal. Junior goalie Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) recorded 13 saves for Alfred.

Nazareth set the tone on offense early on, finding the back of the net twice within the first five minutes of action. An assist from sophomore attack Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) to Soriano put the Saxons on the board. Less than two minutes later, a goal from Mosher tied the game. The Soaring Eagles scored once more before the end of the first quarter, as Alfred fell behind by a 3-2 margin.

Nazareth expanded their lead in the early stages of the second quarter, but a goal from DiDomineck kept Alfred within reach. A pass from DiDomineck to Forte resulted in an opening, as the Saxons were tied with the Soaring Eagles by a 4-4 score. Nazareth scored twice more, but Alfred relied on Forte to find the back of the net once more as the team entered halftime with a 6-5 disadvantage.

The Saxons found rhythm on the offensive end early out of the break, as Forte tied the game at the 10:22 mark in the third quarter. A man-up situation for Alfred allowed junior midfielder Jonathan Kay (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) to find Mosher for a goal. The Soaring Eagles retaliated with an offensive push of their own, as they scored five unanswered goals to close out the third quarter. Nazareth scored six more goals in the final quarter to prevent any chance at a comeback for Alfred.

"We needed to do a better job on the face-off opportunities today with Garrette Briggs out," Lockner said. "We also need to capitalize on the opportunities we create for ourselves. Otherwise, we did a great job on the turnovers and clears and did what we needed to do to put ourselves in a better position to win the game."

The Saxons will next travel to face Utica College on Saturday at 1pm from Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
