ROCHESTER, NY- The Saxons displayed bright moments in their 1-0 loss to St. John Fisher College on Saturday from Growney Stadium. Alfred drops to an 0-2 (0-2 Empire 8) overall record, while the Cardinals (1-1, 1-1 Empire 8) secured their first win of the spring season.
The Saxons forced seven shots, four of which were on goal. Alfred earned seven corner kick opportunities. First year goalkeeper
Jasmine Sims (Yorkshire, NY/Pioneer) made her first collegiate start in goal and recorded nine saves.
First year midfielder
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) and junior forward
Karah Landries (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley Central) each totaled two shots with one on goal. Junior midfielder
Abigail Austin (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and first year defender
Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) were each responsible for a shot on goal.
"Jasmine played really well for us today," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "She made some key saves to keep us in the game."
Each side traded shots to open the game, as Sims was responsible for five saves in the first half of action. In the closing minutes before halftime, the Cardinals took advantage of an opening and scored their lone goal. The Saxons stood tall defensively in the second half, only allowing four shots on goal. Alfred couldn't find translate their success onto the offensive end, leaving the low-scoring affair to end in the Cardinals' favor.
"I thought we displayed effort today," Yanni said. "We saw improvements from things we have been working on. The coaching staff has a few things that we need to work through to help put the team in a better position to succeed."
Alfred will continue their spring season next with a home contest against The Sage Colleges on Friday at 4pm from Yunevich Stadium.
